Rule Clarification 5.3.5 C & D

We have a debate on our team about the 5.3.5 C and D.

Interpretation 1: One group believes that if an AVR pilot drops a Conex box perfectly the first time (no contact with the dashed spaced) within the parking space, they will receive maximum points.

Interpretation 2: The other group believes that we MUST drop the Conex box touching the parking lot and then taxi in order to receive maximum points. Should the AVR pilot make a perfect drop, rule C (no contact with the parking lot lines) then they will be required to pick up and redrop.

Which is correct?

Rule 5.3.5 C and D state:

c. Landing the Conex Box - If the AVR Drone is attempting to land a Conex Box on a
Parking Spot but the Conex Box does not land with some contact to the Parking Spot
dashed lines, the AVR Drone pilot is required for the AVR Drone and Conex Box to
“take off” and repeat the landing.
d. Once the AVR Drone has landed the Conex Box on a Parking Spot and the Conex
Box is contacting any portion of the Parking Spot dashed lines, the AVR Drone pilot
is allowed for Taxiing the Drone to move the Conex Box inside the dashed lines (i.e.
inside means the Conex Box is not contacting any portion of the Parking Spot
dashed lines) to receive the maximum point values.

Very interesting interpretations! Another description that hopefully clears the debate:

  • Maximum points (3 + 2 = 5 pts)will be given for 2 scenarios: 1) A Conex box lands inside the Parking Spot and it is not contacting any of the dashed lines or 2) The Conex box lands and is contacting some portion of the dashed lines, then the AVR drone is allowed to follow up with Taxiing on the floor to move inside the Parking Spot ending with no contact on the dashed lines.
  • The only time that Taxiing is allowed is if the AVR Drone has landed the Conex box on some portion of the Parking Spot dashed lines.
  • Points will not be given if a Conex box is landed outside of the dashed lines and the pilot attempts to Taxi the Conex box to get to the Parking Spot (ie - we are trying to celebrate the “vertical” aspects of the competition!)
-Let us know who won the debate or if neither won!

Thanks Rohn!

It appears that interpretation #1 wins - a perfect drop off will yield maximum points. The Interpretation #2 folks were afraid we’d be REQUIRED to taxi (as if that was part of this year’s challenge) to get maximum points and your response makes it clear that is not the case.
