Howdy - exciting news to share today. Many teams have been asking for more information regarding how the LWC Target functions, or how they can build one to practice with - definitely a key ingredient to being competitive in this year’s challenge!
I’d like to give a major thanks to @lancer, who has put together a great writeup for building an Arduino “practice field” version using commercially-available components here:
Although the official field uses slightly different materials than PVC pipe and hot glue, this version can be considered functionally equivalent for design / practice purposes, and will be confirmed by Appendix A in an upcoming Game Manual update. Most notably, the light sensor / lens tube setup is key, intended to create a target that reduces the risk of false negatives (or positives) regardless of lighting conditions.
